The ISMF is seeking qualified medical professionals to form an expert panel tasked with assessing the eligibility of transgender athletes to compete in their affirmed gender category. This is in accordance with the current guidelines established by ISMF to ensure fair and equitable competition, while prioritizing athlete welfare.
The selected panel will contribute to the development of medically sound, evidence-based criteria for the inclusion of transgender athletes in competitive sports.
ABOUT US:
Founded in 2007, the ISMF is the global governing body for competitive ski mountaineering. Since 2016, the organisation has been officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee. Its main goals are the promotion, regulation and development of the sport of ski mountaineering worldwide. Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, the ISMF’s membership consists of 49 national federations located in Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. The ISMF organizes ski mountaineering Senior and Youth World Cups, as well as Masters’ and World Championships. For the first time, ski mountaineering was a medal sport at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has been included in the programme of the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic Winter Games.
OBJECTIVE OF THE TENDER:
The objective of this call is to establish a panel of medical professionals with relevant expertise to:
- Review medical documentation submitted by transgender athletes.
- Provide clinical evaluations when necessary.
- Assess athletes’ eligibility to participate in sports under their affirmed gender category, in accordance with the ISMF transgender regulations 2024.
ELIGIBILITY (REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS):
- Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Specialization in endocrinology, sports medicine, or related fields preferred.
- Experience working with transgender individuals and/or in the field of sports medicine.
- Knowledge of the latest research and guidelines regarding transgender athletes and sports participation.
- Ability to conduct unbiased, evidence-based assessments.
- Strong communication and report-writing skills.
- Membership in good standing with relevant medical boards or professional organizations
SCOPE OF WORK:
The responsibilities of the medical panel include, but are not limited to:
- Reviewing hormone levels and other relevant health metrics in accordance with international sports federation guidelines.
- Evaluating athletes’ physiological readiness to compete in their affirmed gender category.
- Participating in panel meetings, both in person and virtually.
- Providing formal written reports on eligibility decisions.
- Maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical guidelines throughout the process.

The selection of panel members will be based on:
- Professional qualifications and experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in transgender healthcare and sports medicine.
- Understanding of ethical issues surrounding athlete eligibility.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
