Cardona Coll and Harrop take the Sprint glory

The World Cup week in the region Dents du Midi kicked off with a Sprint race.

Morgins, 7 February 2023 – Fourth stage of the WÜRTH MODYF ISMF World Cup might have a big word on the final World Cup standings. Three point-awarded competitions in four days can significantly shake up the rankings.

The first competition of the busy week was the Sprint race. A short and technical course with a long downhill that was familiar to the athletes from the last year’s edition. And it delivered the promised world-class action.

Harrop is back in the top spot
The women’s race saw a comeback of last season’s Overall World Cup winner Emily Harrop. The French woman missed the race in Andorra due to a broken rib and lost the chance to defend the overall championship. But nevertheless, Harrop delivered some spectacular races in Morgins from the qualification phase to the final.

She won all races, her quarterfinal, semifinal and the last race of the day, crossing the finish line in the first place.

“It’s been some weeks since my last World Cup race. I’m happy to be back, to win here. Marianna (Jagerčíková) always starts fast, so I wanted to keep my rhythm and avoid mistakes. On the foot part, I still had power, and I went full gas to the finish line,” said Harrop, who won six of the last eight World Cup sprints.

Jagerčíková was fighting for victory, but she finished third after the photo-finish. Giulia Murada “stole” second place from her at the finish line to move into second place overall. Célia Perillat-Pessey of France, who finished fifth in the Sprint, remains the World Cup leader.

Last year’s deja vu
Oriol Cardona Coll of Spain did not advance to the finals in the previous two sprints of the season. Last weekend, he won three Spanish championship titles in three days and brought his excellent form to Switzerland.

Cardona Coll and Arno Lietha (Switzerland) went neck to neck in the finals. The Spanish athlete had two-three seconds at the top, which he defended in the downhill to the finish line.

“Today, I didn’t expect much as Sprint as about highs and lows. I felt tired in the morning, but the final with Arno was a great fight. It reminded me of last year. I had a little gap on the top, and it was enough in the final,” said Cardona Coll.

Lietha finished second on home soil as he did last year. The bronze spot claimed the leader of the overall standings Thibault Anselmet.
